In the dark ages iTunes used the low-quality (128 kbps), encrypted mp4 format.

With the latest iTunes you can download previous purchase in the high-quality (256 kbps), unrestricted m4a format.

However, the m4v movies purchased from the iTunes store are still encrypted.

Assuming that you still have access to a Windows or OS X computer with iTunes installed you can probably download and using Requiem to recover your legally purchased content (this only works with an authorized iTunes account).

Once you've decrypted your files, you'll still need to install m4a and other media players in order to play them.
