Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli (a.k.a. "The Classics")
I consider Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli to be its own subcategory.
I wouldn't recommend those to someone who is only casually interested in Anime. From my point of view it takes a fair investment - 3 or 4 movies - before you have enough exposure to the cultural paradigms to enjoy it
- Princess Mononoke
- Spirited Away
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Howl's Moving Castle
Then again, I think you kinda have to have seen some of these to understand the way gods and spirits
Other Notes
- Pacific Rim was a terrible movie, but its story was probably taken from NERV.
- Inception is pretty much the live-action adaptation of Paprika
- Haven't checked myself, but The Lion King is maybe a rip of Kimba the White Lion

Fairy Gone - recommended by Jon. I started but didn't finish because some episodes weren't available.
There must be an anime similar to Elantris. Seems like a perfect fit.
